Education fund Tanzania

Marijke and Erick Westerman, board members of the Desta Foundation, live in Tanzania, near Arusha. They see that also in Tanzania, access to good education is not a given for many children.

There are significant differences within Tanzanian society, and opportunities depend heavily on the social context in which children grow up.

Desta Foundation considers good education a crucial factor in children's personal development, and ultimately, in societal development.

New project: Education fund Tanzania

The Desta Foundation is therefore launching a new project and it is expanding its activities to Tanzania.

We are in close contact with the Watoto Foundation (www.watotofoundation.nl), an impressive project that reintegrates boys living on the streets into society through education and intensive training. For four years, the boys participate in an intensive education and training program at the Watoto residential and training center near Arusha. They learn a craft and, at the end of the training period, are guaranteed a job in the area surrounding the center.

Several boys want to continue their education, and the Desta Foundation wants to contribute to this. We are entering into a partnership with the Watoto Foundation, with the Desta Foundation providing funds for further education for this group of boys. This partnership ensures that the funds are spent wisely, as the Watoto Foundation remains in direct contact with the students.

The Desta Foundation would like to expand this program and offer more young people the opportunity to receive quality further education. This is crucial for these boys' lives.

Tuition fees range from €600 to €1,000 per year per student, depending on the type of program and the school.
